The list of our desires is endless. Whenever we acquire one goal, we wish for the next one to be accomplished. Some common statements which keep revolving in our mind are:
- I wish I would never have done this!
- I will be happier when I get that!
- Getting this job would make me happy!
But did you ever notice, we never achieve EVER LASTING HAPPINESS. The contentment that we feel after getting something we have had longed for vanishes soon. And the quest for grabbing yet another better materialistic thing starts very soon. The truth is that we don’t understand what happiness really means.
Happiness in its Real Meaning:
Our perception of achieving happiness is totally wrong when we consider “having things or doing things” would fill up our lives with delight. In true essence:
“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.” Denis Waitley
Four Simple Ways to Attain Happiness:
1- Count your blessings:
Grateful individuals are the happy individuals. If you wish to remain happy today, begin your day with a feeling of gratefulness in your heart. Look around yourself and be thankful for whatever you have. If you think life is getting too hard, just say thank you and try to grow. Don’t let obstacles knock you down. Smile and move on.
2- Take pleasure in your present:
Our most precious asset is our PRESENT. To remain happy, cherish every single moment of your life. Stop pondering over what has happened in the past. Everything happens for a reason. Learn to live in your present. It’s okay to remember good old days, but constantly feeling guilty over your past would seriously affect your life.
“It is important that we forgive ourselves for making mistakes. We need to learn from our errors and move on.” Steve Maraboli
3- Be generous:
“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more”.H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
Generosity and happiness are directly related to one another. If you want to soothe your soul, the best possible way is to be generous. Being generous does not mean spending money only. In fact, doing little things to please those around you would certainly fill your heart with happiness.
4- Please learn to let go:
“I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.”Martha Washington
Every one of us experiences certain uncontrollable scenarios. Happy is the person who can combat such situations by following the simple rule “let it go!” Just make yourself realize that life is like that, and the only one whom you can control is your own self.
We would like to conclude by agreeing with the famous saying of Aristotle;
“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”
